​Hydrolysis of the biodegradable fraction of the solid waste begins in the acid formation phase, which leads to rapid accumulation of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) in the Leachate, the most complex type of wastewater which has to comply with environmental regulations.

Rotting food and other decaying organic waste create decomposition gases, from aerobic and anaerobic decomposition, respectively. Odour and air emissions control are the main challenges of a landfill operator while Biogas and Biomass revenue cannot be neglected.
